What Is Worship Like at Lutheran Campus Ministry?

We worship on Sunday mornings at Augustana Lutheran Church, a neighborhood congregation rooted in the depth and diversity of the Lutheran theological and liturgical traditions. We celebrate Holy Communion every Sunday at both services, and all who are baptized and desire the sacrament are welcome to receive it. Worship is led by Pastor John Gorder, Campus Pastor Elizabeth Musselman, Cantor Daniel Schwandt, and the parish choir (Augustana Cantorei). Augustana’s Sunday morning worship is comprised of people of many ages, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds: students, faculty, and staff, as well as many local families and Hyde Parkers who aren't directly associated with the University of Chicago or the Lutheran School of Theology.

In addition, Lutheran Campus Ministry worships together every Thursday night during the academic quarter, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. This service combines Holden Evening Prayer, some Taize songs, and Holy Communion, and it is followed by dinner and Bible study.

All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to come and worship with us. You don’t have to be Lutheran; you don’t have to know how to read music or sing with gusto; you don’t have to receive communion; you don’t have to stay afterward for the coffee hour. Come as you are—tired from a night of studying or energized by caffeine; casual or dressy; questioning or charismatic; exuberant or skeptical—all are welcome! At the heart of worship is God’s gift of grace—given for all. If you would like to know more about how Lutherans practice Christianity, visit our national church's web site or talk with one of the pastors. If you are interested in being baptized, talk with one of the pastors.
